Life Lately: November 2016

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a Life Lately post, so I’m overdue to update everyone on… life.

Sip and Paint

Last Tuesday night, Clay was busy with MMA/BJJ and I was bored around the house. A local restaurant, The Loophole John’s Island, had a Sip and Paint class that was free with a food purchase, so I decided to try it out. I didn’t have anything at the house for dinner anyway, so I had nothing to lose.

It was fun getting out of the house for a few hours and painting. My painting isn’t that great, but it was something to do. The weather was beautiful and the instructors from Wine and Canvas Charleston were great. I wasn’t a fan of the shrimp tacos I had at the restaurant and wouldn’t order them again, but I’d love to do another sip-and-paint with Wine and Canvas.

Yelp’s Ballot Bash

On Election Night, I went to Yelp’s Ballot Bash party in downtown Charleston. It was an open event for everyone with a Yelp account (not just elites) with tons of free food, drinks, and swag.

The Ballot Bash party was held at LaunchPad, a coworking space downtown, and with all the meeting rooms, offices, and hallways, it was a maze of fun. You could paint an election themed picture, bid on silent auction items, spin wheels for prizes, and take photo booth pictures.

My favorites of the night: The bang bang shrimp from Bonefish Grill, the sushi from Local’s Mt. Pleasant, the grilled zucchini sandwiches from Persimmon Cafe, and the alcohol-infused chocolate ice cream from Sno-Bar.

Watching the election results certainly took lots of alcohol-infused ice cream, as I woke up quite sad and scared on Wednesday morning.

Short Hair, Don’t Care

Over the last few weeks, I got *really* tired of my super long hair. I’ve wanted to cut it for months, but so many people told me they liked it long. The ends were splitting, but I decided to make a drastic change instead of just getting a trim. When Clay left the house last Thursday, I had long light brown/blonde hair- but when he came home that night, I had short, dark hair.

I got a haircut from the shop in the mall (I had a $2 off coupon) and dyed it with a box of hair color from Wal-Mart. $20ish for a new look- I like it!

Charleston Beer Runners Kudu Takeover

The weather here in SC finally feels like Fall, and last Thursday, the Charleston Beer Runners ran to Kudu Coffee and Craft Beer, a local coffee shop downtown. Thursday was a scheduled rest day for me, so I drove to the coffee shop, hung out, and had a really delicious chai latte. The barista suggested it, and it didn’t disappoint- plus the latte art was cool.

Kudu is in the historic district and a much better coffee option than the corporate coffee shops just down the street. If you’re not into coffee and want a beer, they offer $4 pints and an extensive menu. There’s even a fun courtyard that’s dog-friendly and great for hanging out and relaxing. It was great to be downtown on a beautiful Fall night.

I hope everyone’s having a wonderful Fall so far- Thanksgiving and the holidays are almost here.

  1. Paint and sip sounds like it was a lot of fun and a pretty sweet deal that the class was free with a food purchase.

Alcohol infused ice cream sounds like a good way to handle the election. Yikes.

It was great ice cream. Unfortunately, I’m trying to watch my food, beverage, and dessert intake until I’m safely training again. So that means no adult ice cream for now!

  2. I love your hair cut! I got sick of mine being long too and chopped it all off. I tend to go through cycles like that and I somehow never cut just a little bit off. Once I am done, I am done. I also love to latte leaf! So artsy and seasonal 🙂 I have never heard of alcohol infused ice cream (other than like a bushwacker maybe, but that’s still a drink), but it kind of sounds kind of amazing.

  3. I’m the same when it comes to hair cuts and colour! I don’t spend tonnes of money getting it done. I think we talked about this before though. 🙂 Your hair looks cute! I’m partial to brunettes. 😉

  4. Liz says:

Where is an after picture of your hair? I need to look on FB! I think I actually saw the picture, but to me, I just always picture you with shorter, darker hair, so when I saw it, I felt like I needed to see a before picture because I couldn’t picture you. I can’t wait to get to Charleston and start exploring! Maybe I should Yelp review every single place I go to so that I can become a Yelp Elite too. I’ve done quite a few in Atlanta and on my travels already. I really like all of those sip and paint type of things. I did one for my birthday that Kassie planned and it was a ton of fun, but it was SUPER crowded at the place I went to. I think doing it over a meal seems like a nice idea!

    • Amy Lauren says:

It’s definitely easier to become an elite and get into events here than it is in a city like Atlanta. Don’t get me wrong, not all elites get into the events here and we do have wait lists… but of 3 years of being elite, I think there was maybe 1 I didn’t get into. If you write good reviews, you can definitely become an elite though.

The best after pic so far of my hair is the one from the election night party… you can see how much shorter it is in the pic and that it’s dark.

      • Liz says:

Hah, totally didn’t even notice that picture! I even went back to look at the pictures of your hair in the post and somehow missed that completely! Maybe because that’s how I picture you anyway!

  5. I was way too nervous to watch election results with anyone. I was running to the bathroom every 10 minutes. One of the worst nights of my life. So not kidding. Ugh but you know this. 🙂

I do love your short hair! Looking good!

    • Amy Lauren says:

The party was amazing but when I got home and the results were trickling in, that was terrible (I was watching at the party but that was still too early to really know). So far I’m really loving the shorter hair too… it’s easier to wash and dry! If I were actually running that would be a great thing, lol.

  6. Elizabeth C. says:

Wait- where are the pictures of your before and after hair!! I see the before hair! That’s really cool that you went for a change. Must have felt refreshing. That chai looks tasty. Sounds like you had a nice week of socializing, eating, running and being a Yelp rockstar!

  7. I like your new hair! It looks great! It’s always fun to change things up 🙂

Also, the painting you did looks awesome! I love doing things like that!
