Lights (and Ice Cream) Before Christmas!

Last weekend, Clay and I, along with our other awesome newlywed friends Ashley and Neil, went to Columbia to Riverbanks Zoo to the Lights Before Christmas display. We heard a lot about this from our friend (and mine and Clay’s wedding photographer) PJ, so we wanted to check it out. It was pretty amazing, and a couple of our other friends have gone to see the display since, so I think we started a trend.

We started the night off with dinner at Pawley’s Front Porch. They were featured on the Food NetworkDiners, Drive-ins, and Dives” show. I had a veggie burger and sweet potato fries, and it was delish! Clay had a specialty burger too. Ashley and Neil had the regular/house burgers but both said they were really tasty, which says a lot because the burgers weren’t drowned in toppings like mine and Clay’s.

After we ate, we went to the zoo to see the lights and walked around a ton! It was actually chilly for once and felt like winter, which says a lot in the south.

We also saw this guy who was running/walking 50 miles on a treadmill that day to raise money and awareness for penguins. I thought it was really cool, I would love to use my running somehow to make a difference like he was. Running to raise money and awareness would be so much better than running an ultramarathon or doing a triathlon. He was pretty cool!

Along with the lights, the staff at Riverbanks decorated Christmas trees for the areas/departments of the zoo.

The bird area did an angry birds tree, haha.

We didn’t get to see many animals because most were asleep since it was after dark (Lights Before Christmas is separate from park admission, so we just went to the zoo for that), but we did get to see a few. Plus, the indoor displays were all open, so that was a good chance to see animals and warm up at the same time.

We stayed at the zoo for a few hours, then started the drive home. On the way, we stopped at a truck stop that had a Dairy Queen so that we could get dessert and hang out a bit. The truck stop had Dairy Queen, Subway, and a gas station, and the workers had to do all of the jobs- I felt kinda bad for them.

Oh, and Dairy Queen ice cream is the best for a chain, so much better than most fast food ice cream but not as heavy as Brusters or Cold Stone. I wish we had a Dairy Queen in Florence! But, I can definitely settle for Sundae House and TCBY Treats.

Q.) Do you look at Christmas lights during the holiday season? Oh yes, we love lights! A few years ago, I went to the James Island Christmas Light display near Charleston, it was also amazing. We try to get out at least once a year for this!

Q.) If you eat burgers, what do you like on your burger? I eat veggie burgers, and I usually don’t get cheese on them, but I do like pretty much any vegetables on them. I also like honey mustard sauce or other sauces instead of mayo.

I love all the pics of the lights! I went to similar thing in Birmingham a few years ago. It was pretty fun! I think the treadmill idea is awesome! What a great way to raise money! I haven’t been to a Dairy Queen in ages. The ice cream was pretty good from what I remember!

Q.) Do you look at Christmas lights during the holiday season? I love going around to different neighborhoods during the holidays. It’s one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season.
Q.) If you eat burgers, what do you like on your burger? I usually just eat them with cheese and ketchup. I don’t like mustard, mayo, tomatoes, onions, or anything like that. I’m somewhat of a picky eater!
